The purpose of the special programs division of the District Attorney's Office is to provide for the prosecution and collection of worthless checks. The Worthless Check Program operates in compliance with sections 30-36-1 to 30-36-10 NMSA.

Goals and Objectives
- Educate merchants and victims in the proper procedure for accepting checks so as to reduce the number of worthless checks passed and to obtain enough information to successfully prosecute the check writer.
- Assist local law enforcement agencies by processing worthless checks directly through the Worthless Check Program leaving law enforcement free to deal with more serious crimes.
- Recover restitution from check writers and return the money to merchants in the community.
- Prosecute those check writers who refuse to pay restitution.
